The most favored woman in many of our lives is likely our own mother, but when it comes to moms in the entertainment world, there is a clear queen at the top of the Most Popular Fictional Moms list.

Without a doubt being a mom is hard, period. Certainly it is harder than playing one on TV. That aside, we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the lasting impact that pretend moms play in pop culture. Where would we be without the Marge Simpsons or Carol Bradys floating around the zeitgeist? No place we want to be, that’s for sure.

While there were plenty of moms that pretty much everyone is familiar with, like your Lucy Richardos or your Wilma Flintstones, some less-famous fictional moms made the cut too. Take for instance Debbie Eagan, Michigan’s most popular fictional mom. Mrs. Eagan is from the 2017 Netflix original series GLOW that looks into the world of women’s wrestling in the 1980s.

Our list was dominated by television moms, but movies managed to earn one victory thanks to Alaska’s love of Elastagirl, one of the characters from the 2004 Pixar hit The Incredibles. And while there are certainly moms that are favored in the land of books, there was also a book mom (Molly Weasly from the Harry Potter books, South Carolina + Mississippi) and a musical mom (Donna Sheridan from the Mamma Mia musical, Utah).

Though if we’re sticking to the base material, Kentucky’s most popular fictional mom, “Little House on the Prairie” character Caroline Ingalls, and all four Game of Thrones moms we mentioned previously should also be considered book characters as well as TV characters.

Our friends at Chicco USA were curious about which fictional mom was the most popular. That led them to a Google where they collected data from the last five years. After processing the data, they were able to ascertain the most popular fictional moms in every one of our American states.

The results showed two things: A clear favorite, and a heated race for second place. Let’s see which mom got the most love.

1. Daenerys Targaryen

Is it a shock that the Mother of Dragons was at the top of the most popular moms list? No, no it isn’t. Daenerys Targaryen was by far the clear winner. Daenerys slayed the competition in nine states across America.

To further show how beloved this Game of Thrones mom is, not only did she take the crown in this list, the second place spot was an eight-way tie consisting of moms that won just two states.

Daenerys Targaryen isn’t the only mother to appear on the list. Cersei Lannister and Olenna Tyrell made the cut as well earning most popular in two states locations (DC and RI respectively).

2. Claire Dunphy, Meredith Grey, Lois Griffin, Rainbow Johnson, Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel, Lucy Ricardo, Marge Simpson, and Molly Weasley (eight-way tie)

These moms have a couple of things in common. First, each of them come from the land of the small screen. Second, they all were the most popular mothers in two states each. And finally, blue hair aside, they show an impressive array of diversity.

3. Midwest Mom

Modern Family’s Claire Dunphy being the most popular mom in Iowa and Nebraska was enough to net her the title of “Most Popular Fictional Mom in the Midwest.” This is a bit ironic considering the show is based around three California families, but considering the show’s national popularity over the 2010s, it’s not exactly a surprising result.

4. Northeast’s Most Noted Mom

Maine and Vermont have Family Guy’s Lois Griffin as their most popular fictional mom which makes her the winner of the northeast. Unlike Claire Dunphy and the midwest, this one makes perfect sense as Family Guy is actually set in Rhode Island.

5. South and West Share Love of Mom

The south was a tie between “Harry Potter’s” Molly Weasly (South Carolina, Mississippi) and Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen (Virginia, Florida), but the west belonged solely to the Mother of Dragons. Daenerys is actually very popular out west, winning Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and Washington.
