The recent intrigue with Royalty and the Regency era, courtesy of hit shows like Bridgerton and The Crown, seems to have everyone and their Corgi thinking, “Hey, I’d like to have a title and hobnob with the posh and famous!” Want proof? A little research from real estate website Mashroom found that searches for How to become a Lord have increased by 488% with similar results for Ladyships.
The desire to live that dream has been around for centuries. Lordships of the Manor titles date back to 1066 and are one of the oldest titles in England. While they don’t hold the same rights as back in the day, the title Lord not only looks impressive on your passport, but it also adds a little coveted elitism among your peers.
Which begs the question, is it possible to become a Lord or Lady without having birthright or getting married?
The answer is yes, although you have to be very careful about it. Many companies boast of selling Lordships starting from £30, which is a little over $40 across the pond. Unfortunately, most of these sites are not legitimate, and instead of a title, you’d be buying one pricy piece of paper.
The Manorial Services, however, is reported to be one of the only, if not the only reputable sites you can buy Lord of The Manor titles. There are currently 15 titles available, although some are more appealing (and expensive) than others — it mostly depends on location, but also on history. The map below shows you where and what’s available. And of course, some names are more desirable than others.
Frankly, we were surprised when we found out how relatively easy it is to gain a title, according to Manorial Services. Check out:
